Parks Dinarides organized a second workshop of Indexation - assessment of local communities’ involvement in the management of protected areas of Dinarides countries, at National Park “Skadar lake”. Inhabitants of this park gave their opinions on the cooperation with management bodies in the area of planning and management in the park, education, communication, and on the activities significant for social and economic development of the park and equal opportunities for the usage of natural resources in the area.
The event has been governed by the representatives Parks Dinarides, whereas the opportunity to give their opinion on the current situation and the possibilities for future cooperation has been given to seventeen representatives of the citizens, institutions and organizations: park management, municipalities and local communities, Directorate for Investments, development of small and medium enterprises and EU funds management, association of fishermen, ship owners, women entrepreneurs of Crmnica, producers of honey, wine, etc.
Local community representatives indicated that the priority for future cooperation should be to reduce poaching, waste management, education and promotion of composting in households and restaurants, as well as to enhance regulations and criteria for support to small producers and entrepreneurs in tourism through different programs of competent institutions. As good practice examples they have mentioned the initiative undertaken last week by ecological activists and businessmen “Let’s clean Virpazar”, as well as the initiative undertaken by competent authorities for enhancing the system for waste and package treatment upon usage of pesticides, involving around 100 agricultural households.
“Activities of this type are significant for us managers, in order to better understand the needs of the local community and adjust the activities of the park to their real needs. For years now, this park has had an adviser for cooperation with local community, as well as a socio–economic forum established, that conducts regular meetings to discuss important issues. This has been a second time to willfully respond to the initiative taken by Parks Dinarides and WWF, in order to improve the level of communication with local community and undertake joint initiatives”, Nenad Ivanović, a direktor of NP “Skadar lake” said.
The Indexation is the initiative initiated by Parks Dinarides in cooperation with WWF Adria, within “Protected Areas for Nature and People” Programme (PA4NP), in eight regional countries. It has been a unique instrument for measuring and enhancement of the involvement of local communities in the management of protected areas. The methodology is based on gathering the data on how protected areas and the representatives of local communities evaluate the existing mutual cooperation, whereas the achieved results serve to develop recommendations and implement new initiatives. Being one of the results of the first cycle, NP “Skadar lake” and local school “Milan Vukotić” from Golubovci have been included into the Regional Educational Program “A network of schools in protected areas”, together with the colleagues from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina – Lidija Brnović, program coordinator in Parks Dinarides said.
