Durmitor National Park was proclaimed in 1952, and since 1980, it is on the UNESCO list of World Natural and Cultural Heritage. Special protection zones are Mlinski potok, Škrčka lakes basin with narrow canyon valley of Sušica, Crna Poda, Barno Lake with its most immediate vicinity, Zabojsko Lake and Tara river canyon, which is protected by UNESCO.

The characteristics of this Park are diverse ecosystems, some of the highest peaks of the Dinarides, glacial lakes and the Tara River Canyon. Durmitor has 48 peaks over 2,000 meters, 18 glacial lakes above 1400 m above the sea level, called “mountain eyes”, as well as five canyons. Forests occupy a relatively small area, but some of them are true rarities of nature as black pine forest on the site of Crna poda, whose grand trunks of height up to 50 m, resist the time for as much as 450 years. Of the 1,325 species of flora of Durmitor and the surrounding canyons, as much as 900 species belong to high mountain flora (above 1500 meters above the sea). Endemic species make up 15% of the total high mountain flora, which includes 122 species, while in the total endemic flora of Durmitor as much as 77% are the high mountainous endemic plants. On the whole massif of Durmitor great height range and variety of habitats caused the extraordinary wealth of flora and fauna. Vast forests, open meadows, cliffs, Durmitor peaks, abundance of lakes are important for existence and richness of animal life. In the zone of high-mountain pastures and rocky areas, in a patient observer’s sight chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra) may appear and the presence of the blind dog is considered a rarity. This zone is inhabited by glacial species of birds snow finch, alpine accentor, shore lark, water pipit as preys kestrel, golden eagle and griffon vulture which visits this place for food. Mountain and Mosor rock lizard are the most numerous representatives of reptiles, and the only representative of amphibians is alpine newt.

Durmitor is one of the biggest mountains that belongs to the Dinaric massif. Along with the magnificent mountain peaks above 2000 meters, this National Park in its range of beauty offers magnificent canyons of the Tara River (the deepest canyon in Europe, and one of the deepest in the world), Draga, Komarnica and Sušica. There are no many places where is emphasized such a strong combination of nature and people. Both are moody, tough, enigmatic. At first glance, harmless and quiet.

Durmitor is a place for adventures. In addition, the National Park offers rafting on Tara River, canoeing, hiking, biking, paragliding, swimming in glacier lakes, lakes rides in wooden boats at 1,450 m, photo-safari, jeep tours, sport fishing. With over 100 kilometres of marked hiking trails, it is one of the best marked mountains of Dinara massive and Europe. Markings that lead to the highest elevations of the Durmitor massif, visitors are offered the possibility of mountaineering with or without a guide. This area is rich in pastures, where tourists meet the tradition, bony, smart people of the dinar race.

NP Durmitor is 124 km away from the capital Podgorica and is connected by highway. Distance from the sea is 140 km, via the highway through the ancient city of Risan, located in the Bay of Kotor.
