Biodiversity protection and development of the protected areas

National Park Paklenica

Biodiversity protection and preservation of natural values is the fundamental function of the protected areas. Therefore, the Parks Dinarides support activities of Dinaric protected areas and their region in protection and preservation of nature in compliance with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as their mutual connection through establishment of the cross-border protected areas’ ecologic network.

The organization activities include planning, implementation and monitoring of protection measures and those of species and habitats management, while networks NATURA 2000 and Emerald have special importance. The Dinarides, being the largest karst system in Europe, are comprised of more than 200 mountains, with as many peaks above 2 000 m, 200 natural lakes, 2 200 km of river flows, more than 40 national parks, 19 areas protected by UNESCO. Such relieve also caused an abundance of flora and fauna. Thus, the Dinarides are a biodiversity center of European relevance, representing a home to a number of endemism (exceeding 10 % of the overall flora in some areas). There are also many of natural forest communities of hardwoods and conifers, of meadows and pastures, which are, among other things, home for protected big beasts such as bear, wolf, fox, lynx, deer.
