Location

The Komovi mountain range is located in the eastern part of Montenegro and the southwestern part of the Plains and Hills region, in the area of Kuč and Vasojevići. It runs in a west-east direction. It covers an area of 68 km². It is surrounded by mountain rivers: Drcka and Kraštica to the north, Tara and Veruša to the west, the Kuča River and Zlorječica to the east, and the Prokletije mountain range to the south. It is a distinct massif of Montenegrin mountains and the most interesting terrain, both in terms of its composition and shape, among the mountains of the Alpine, Dinaric, and Šar systems. Komovi Nature Park covers the territory of three municipalities: Podgorica, Andrijevica and Kolašin. Total surface of park on teritory municipality of Andrijevica is 24.6km2.

History

The Komovi Nature Park is named after the Komovi mountain range, one of the most impressive mountain ranges in Montenegro and the Dinaric Alps. It is an exceptionally attractive area, comprising a single glacial valley, Međukomlje, bordered by three mountain peaks: Vasojevićki Kom (2460m), Kučki (2487m) and Ljevoriječki Kom (2453m) and the plateaus of Štavna, Ljuban, Rogam, Turjak and Carine.

The Komovi Regional Nature Park for the Municipality of Andrijevica was proclaimed on 21 August 2015.

Within the Komovi Regional Park, protection zones have been defined where protection regimes of degree II and III are implemented.

Protection regime of degree II – active protection, applies to the high-mountain area of the Komovi and the Mojanska River, and the Kozeljska River and Žuren forest reserves.

Protection regime of the third degree – sustainable use applies to two sub-zones: 3a – Landscape maintenance and 3b – Sustainable forest use.

Nature

In this area, climatic and other ecological factors have led to the development of a diverse and rich flora and fauna, in which distinct altitudinal zones have developed, starting from the river valleys and dense broadleaf forests, mixed and coniferous forests in the lower and middle parts of the mountain massif to rich mountain meadows and pastures, and screes and talus slopes on the very mountain peaks.

The area of the Komovi Nature Park is characterised by a diversity of plant life, reflected in the presence of a large number of mountain, medicinal, endemic and relict plant species.

The rich vegetation includes: the mountain buttercup (Ranunculus montanus), the hybrid buttercup (Ranunculus hybridus) and the scutate buttercup (Ranunculus scutatus), the squill (Scilla squillacea), and other dense, succulent mountain grass species. The Komovi are home to one of the most beautiful high-mountain flowers, the yellow poppy (Trollius europaeus), Kerner’s poppy (Papaver kernerii), alpine sunflower (Helianthemum alpestre), Orphanides’ violet (Viola orphanidis), creeping saxifrage (Saxifraga oppositifolia), pale clover (Trifolium pallescens), alpine feverfew (Scutellaria alpina), Albanian lily (Lilium albanicum), Scardic Narthecium (Narthecium scardicum), Heart-leaved Orchis (Dactylorhiza cordigera), Orchis sambucina, Gentian-leaved Plantain (Plantago gentianoides), Cretan Germander-senecio (Senecio creticus), Alpine Sassafras (Pulsatilla alpina).

In the high-mountain endemic flora of the Komovi, the greatest number of species belong to the Adriatic-Mediterranean type (Cerastium dinaricum, Arenaria gracilis, Plantago reniformis, Veronica satureioides, Saxifraga prenja, Hieracium guentheribeckii, H. Gymnocephalum, etc.), to the Illyric-Scardus-Pindus species (Hieracium stuppeum, Phyteuma pseudoorbiculare, Euphorbia capitulata, Amphoricarpus autariatus, Pedicularis malyi, Achillea abrotanoides, etc.) and the Illyric-Mysian geoelements (Pedicularis brachyodonta, Cicerbita pancicii, etc.).

Of the trans-Balkan endemics, the following are present: Silene sendtnerii, Acer heldreichii subsp. visianii, Pinguicula balcanica, Pedicularis hoermmanian and others.

The high-mountain area of the Komovi contains a number of local endemics found only on the Komovi and nowhere else in the world, namely: Androsace komovensis Schönswetter & Schneew., Arenaria halacsyi Bald., and Gentianella pevalekii Bjelčić & Mayer.

The diversity of plant communities and the varied ecological factors have determined the diversity, dynamics and distribution of the fauna in this area. The lush development of forest stands, which alternate and interweave with meadow, pasture, alpine, riverine and lacustrine ecosystems, has enabled the development of a rich fauna.

No detailed and systematic research has been carried out on any group of mammals in the Komov mountain massif. Based on its natural and other characteristics, it can be concluded that this area is exceptionally valuable, given the presence of numerous habitats for the residence, reproduction and survival of a large number of mammals.
