The Janj rainforest is located on the territory of the Šipovo municipality. Along with Perućica, the rainforest is one of the most famous in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The strict nature reserve “Prašuma Janj” is characterized by intact, preserved and unique forest eco-systems. In June 2021, this protected area was inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in Europe as part of the joint world heritage of 18 countries under the name “Beech Rainforests in the Carpathians and Other Areas of Europe”. The registration of the Janj rainforest is extremely important for Bosnia and Herzegovina, because it is the first natural heritage site of this country to be included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
