Location

It is located in the northern part of the Canton of Sarajevo, encompassing areas of the southern slopes of Ozren, peak and northern slopes of Bukovik. Total surface of the natural monument is 1430.70 hectares. Three protection zones were determined, depending on the degree of protection.

History

The decision on designating the wider area of the waterfall “Skakavac” (Grasshopper) a natural monument was adopted in 2002.

Nature

The surrounding area is one of the most heterogeneous in that region, where spruce-fir forests and beech-fir forests dominate, with spruce on tough acclivities of the terrain. On the shallow calcareous soils, near the waterfall, forests and thickets of black hornbeam, autumn moor grass and black ash are developed. Particularly interesting is the vegetation on the rocks around the waterfall, which is rich in endemic and relict species. This area is included in the third category of protected areas or protected area intended mainly for conservation of specific natural features: from the aspect of its hydrogeomorphological characteristics, extremely high degree of biological diversity, high degree of endemic and relict species of plants, fungi and animals, as well as the relatively high number of endangered species, and the high value of unrepeatable ecosystem and landscape characteristics, taking into account the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Sights

Skakavac is one of the biggest and most beautiful waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina and it represents a real tourist attraction. The waterfall is 98 meters high and is located in an idyllic landscape. Although it does not have large flow of water it is characterized by exceptional beauty, especially in winter when its cascade is overlaid by ice forming fantastic scenes.

Tourism

Many tourists come to this area looking for rest in the nature and recreation. With a walk in the woods to Skakavac, they will be accompanied by chirping of birds and the scent of cypress. The area of Skakavac is equipped with mountain movables for stay in the countryside, rest and relaxation of the whole family. It provides excellent conditions for hiking, mountain biking and many types of extreme sports.

Connection

Skakavac is only 12 km away from the center of Sarajevo. This natural monument “can be reached by car from the city center taking the direction toward the Hall “Huan Antonio Samaran “(ZETRA), and then go further to the settlement Nahorevo. It is possible to come to the ramp at the entrance to the area from where there is 1 km of walk to the waterfall. The area can also be reached by a minibus. Minibus leaves from the street Sutjeska (at the Second Gymnasium) and goes to Nahorevo. From the last stop to the border of the protected area there is approximately 4 km walk. From the entrance into the area to the waterfall there are 4 km more walk.
