National park “Drina” is located in the middle course of the river Drina, i.e. in the eastern part of the Republic of Srpska and Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the territory of the municipality of Srebrenica. It covers the area of Stari Vlach and is part of the inner belt of the Dinaric Mountains. The central coordinate of the protected area according to Greenwich is at 44° 0′ 31.4″ north latitude and 19° 11′ 55.9″ east longitude. The altitude ranges from 291 to 1,265 meters.
By the decision of the Government of the Republic of Srpska, the Public Institution National Park “Drina” was established on February 22, 2018. year, under number 04/1-012-2-418/18 with headquarters in Skelani, municipality of Srebrenica.
“Drina” National Park is one of the youngest parks in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Based on literature data, research, personal knowledge and visits to the field on several occasions, it was determined that this area is unique in terms of flora and vegetation. It includes a significant number of endemic, relict and rare species and communities and represents a unique center of floristic, vegetation and ecosystem diversity. It is important to note that a significant number of vascular plant species that are intended for protection by national and international regulations have been recorded. The exceptional value of the area is contributed by the presence of Pančić’s spruce (Picea omorika), which is an endemic and tertiary relict species. This species used to be widespread in Europe, and today its range is limited to the area around the middle course of the Drina. In Bosnia, it is widespread in the municipalities of Rogatica, Srebrenica, Foča, Čajnič and Višegrad. The most developed populations of Pančić’s spruce are present in several localities (Gostilja, Stolac, Radomišlja, Žepa, Gvozna), and in Serbia it survives and grows on Mount Tara, where it is protected within the National Park. Crevices of limestone rocks in the Drina river canyon represent habitats where the largest number of endemic and relict species are present. A slightly smaller number is present on limestone spiers, and an insignificant number in mesophilic and hygrophilic forests.
Based on several years of field research and existing literature data, about 635 taxa were identified in the area of NP “Drina”.
Among the faunal values, the Brown bear (Ursus arctos), chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), and golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) stand out the most.
