Nature

Fruška Gora is a lonely island mountain in Pannonia. With its highest peak of 539 meters, it belongs to the low mountains, but because it is significantly above the neighboring plain land, it looks solid. To the south and the north it is very jagged with mountain and river flows, while from the chief narrow reef stretch individual, lateral ridges, usually with very steep slopes. Pastures and fertile land, vineyards and orchards, adorn the slopes and lower parts of Fruška gora, while the areas situated at altitudes above 300 meters are covered with dense, deciduous forests. The main feature of this area is the existence of a number of endangered, rare and protected plant and animal species, steppe and forest-steppe habitats, various types of oak forests, wild flora of national and European importance with the presence of the Pannonian endemic and relict species from the Tertiary and the family of orchids, over 200 species of birds of which the most famous are imperial eagle and black stork. On Fruška Gora there are more than 20 species of amphibians and reptiles, and 60 species of mammals. 38 species of mammals are protected as endangered species. Most of them are native species, except for the deer and moufflon, which are grown in the hunting reserve.

Sights

The location, specific geological history and different micro-climate make this mountain very interesting and important for a variety of scientific fields. Thanks to the unique and very numerous fossil remains of flora and fauna, Fruška Gora is called the “mirror of geological past”. Special value and the jewel of Fruška Gora are 16 orthodox monasteries famous for their specific architecture, rich treasuries, libraries and frescoes. Fruška Gora also hides numerous archaeological sites from the prehistoric period
