62 km2

National Park Lovćen is situated in the southwest of Montenegro. It rises from the edge of the Adriatic basin, closing the Bay of Kotor, making hinterland of the ancient coastal town of Kotor. It covers an area of 6220 hectares.

It was proclaimed a National Park in 1952. There are five zones in the Park with special regime of use and management:
• Reserve pine forests of white bark pine (foot of Štirovnik and Jezerski vrh)
• Reserve forest of beech, conifers and rare sawmills
• Reserve beech forests (Konjsko)
• Reserve pine forests of creeping pine (area between Rupa and Blatište)
• Herpetological Reserve (Lake below Jezerski vrh)

On a relatively small area meet numerous and various forms of relief, emphasized in the central part of the mountain, where most of Lovćen rose the most with Štirovnik with 1749 meters and Jezerski vrh with 1,657 meters. Its slopes are rocky, with numerous holes, pits and deep depressions, giving the landscape a distinctive look. Forests and woodlands are the dominant ecosystem that occupies 70% of the territory of the park, while the rest is rocky pasture ecosystem. Water ecosystems are rare. Combination of two climate zones, the Mediterranean and continental, caused the development of rich flora and fauna with numerous endemic species. Among the 1,300 plant species, accounting for 1/3 of the total Montenegrin flora, many of endemic plants are rare, medicinal, aromatic and melliferous. The area of the Park is a habitat for many animal species. In addition to mammals (wolf, bear, wild boar, fox, deer, rabbit, white-breasted hedgehog, Montenegrin voles, etc.), many other animal groups are numerous here, around 200 species of birds, 11 species of reptiles, and others.

National Park is distinguishing for its natural as well as cultural and historical characteristics. Cultural heritage is characterized by memorial monuments, churches, traditional architecture and old roads. On Njeguši are memorial houses of the Montenegrin dynasty Petrović, and on Jezerski vrh grandiose mausoleum to the poet and Bishop Petar II Petrović Njegoš. Sacral architecture of the area of Njeguši is characterized by the modest village churches, constructed in the period between fifteenth and nineteenth century, as well as traditional buildings such as stone houses built next to the rocks to so that the fertile areas were saved. Interesting architectural objects are village threshing floors, which played an important role in the social life of the village. According to their size and appearance, the economic power of the households was often estimated. Particular architectural and environmental significance have the ancient caravan route and famous Lovćen serpentines, the road which, from 1884, along the mountain massive, connects Njeguši and Kotor. Austro-Hungarian rule left valuable infrastructure facilities, water collector in Koritnik, Njeguški plumbing and the entire network of roads with stone retaining walls.

Lovćen offers exceptional opportunities for field trips and hiking. Hikers and mountain climbers can enjoy and take advantage of well-marked trails of light intensity in length from 4 to 13 kilometers. Visitors can use the Adventure Park. It occupies an area of 2 hectares on which 10 trails of varying difficulty is built. Tourists who like local products will be surprised by the specialties offer: ham, cheese from Njeguši, cheese in oil, “kastradina” (sheep smoked meat), sausage from Njeguši. Special taste and aroma of these dishes, which are just typical for this area, is conditioned by the mixing of the mountain and the sea air and the wood used for their drying. For this reason the whole rugged under Lovćen region is dealing with the drying of meat.

Distance of the National Park from Cetinje is 7 km along which, on the National Day of Montenegro, every July 13, is held hill-speed car race Lovćen. Cetinje is 30 km far from Podgorica, via regional highway. The same distance is from Cetinje to the sea, also via the regional highway.
