Location

Mavrovo National Park is located in the southwestern part of the Balkans, near the Macedonian border with Albania and Kosovo, and is part of the municipalities of Mavrovo and Rostusa. This is a great mountain system that stretches along the western edge of the Balkan Peninsula, crossing the borders of several countries.

History

The National Park was declared in 1949, based on the protection of outstanding natural beauty, and scientifically and historically important forest around the valley Mavrovo. The Park is divided into three zones with different levels of protection. The area of the Park, only three years after the declaration, was increased for as much as seven times, from 11,750 ha in 1949 to 73,088 ha in 1952. Today the National Park Mavrovo is one of the largest protected areas of its kind in the region.

Nature

Flora in Mavrovo National Park is a mosaic of different plants. The rich mosaic is made up of 1,000 different species of trees and shrubs. Of these, 12 plants are endemic, while the other 33 plants are very rare in the rest of Macedonia.
The fauna is represented by 12 species of amphibians, 12 species of reptiles, 140 species of birds and 38 species of mammals. Mavrovo is the habitat of the brown bear, the golden eagle and of much endangered species, such as the lynx.
In addition to the Mavrovo Lake, the largest artificial lake in Macedonia, the main representatives of the hydrography of the National Park are river Radika and its tributaries. Radika separates Bistra, Korab and Šar mountains and is a typical mountain river, which is characterized by clear water and trout, which is particularly well known in Macedonia. The river runs through the middle and lower part of the park. Canyon of the river Radika has many beautiful landscapes and areas suitable for fishing. The park is rich in glacial lakes as well, 14 of which are permanent. On Dešat there are five of them, on Korab eight and on Šar Mountain one. The lowest of these is Lokva on Dešat, and at an altitude of 1565 m, while the largest lake is on the top of Korab at the altitude of 2470 m. The lowest point of the Park is located at 600 m, while the highest peak of Mavrovo is at 2764 m.
The National Park Mavrovo has ideal climatic conditions, with mild and moderate winters and warm summer periods and pleasant evening temperatures. For this reason, and because of the fresh mountain air, the region is ideal for tourists with certain health problems, children, sportsmen … The climate is continental, and in some areas is also under the influence of Mediterranean climate. The average annual temperature is about 8-9 degrees.

Sights

Mountains of the National Park belong to three different systems. The first is the mountain system Šar Mountain, which stretches to the west. It has a very rich and jagged relief made up of 52 peaks above 2000 meters. The second system is Korab with the highest peak Veliki Korab 2,764 m, which is a tourist attraction. It is also the highest point of the National Park. The next mountain range located in the territory of the Park is Bistra, with the famous peak Medenica at 2163 m.

Tourism

Mavrovo has best known ski resort in Macedonia “Zare Lazareski”, which provides excellent conditions for winter sports, ski slopes and for enjoying the snow. The highest point which is reached by the ski lift in Ski Center Mavrovo is at the altitude of 1860 meters. Great part of the Ski Center Mavrovo is well protected by the high peaks of Korabi from strong winds, and the ski center is rarely closed due to bad weather and a long ski season on the slopes of the Bistra is enabled. During the summer months, the National Park Mavrovo is very pleasant for walking and hiking. Vast pastures and clear mountain springs are suitable for walking tours, cycling, …
One of the most interesting sights of the National Park Mavrovo is the possibility of observing and photographing wildlife of the Dinara region – the brown bear, lynx, wolf, wild boars, deer and chamois.

Connection

The nearest city centre Mavrovi Anovi is only 7 km away from the Park. From the capital of Macedonia, Skopje, and from the national airport distance is 118 km by the highway. Distance from the main tourist centre of Macedonia, Ohrid, in whose vicinity there is also the airport, is 96 km.
