Location

Notranjski Regional Park lies within the boundaries of the municipality of Cerknica, in southeastern Slovenia. It covers an area of 222 km2.

History

Regional Park was established in 2002 with the aim to preserve, protect and explore the natural and cultural values of the area. Cerknica Lake with the environment was registered in 2006 at Ramsar, the world’s list of wetlands of international importance. Also, due to the endangered species of birds it found in the network of protected natural areas, NATURA 2000.

Nature

Mountain peaks with beautiful views, colorful meadow landscapes, periodic lakes, natural bridges, a mythical underworld, crystal clear streams and magical forests – all located in 222 square kilometers of the Regional Park. Within the park there are five nature reserves: Zadnji kraj, Dujice, Osredki, Levišča, Vranja jama. There are also natural monuments:
• Rakov Škocjan is 2,5 km long and 500 m wide karst valley. Heer on the small area are situated the most different natural phenomena: karst springs, caves, underground rivers, sinkholes, natural bridges, sinkholes.
• Zelške jame represent a system of the underground watercourses, in the length of 3 km with the entrance on the east side Rakov Škocjan.
• George of Iška and Zala, depth of 300 meters, consisting of those two rivers, in the length of several kilometers with numerous rapids, cascades and waterfalls. Because of its natural values it is included in the network of protected areas NATURA 2000.
• Cave Križna jama of length of over 8 km, with 40 emerald lakes, connected with crystal clear river and decorated with numerous cave ornaments.

Sights

It is characterized by a high rate of preservation of natural habitats, numerous natural monuments, the diversity and abundance of living creatures and lush cultural landscape that was created by a long-term coexistence of humans and nature. The characteristic natural attraction, which enjoys international protection is Cerkinško Lake, one of the largest periodic lakes in Europe. The lake usually survives eight months during the year. During its highest level, with 30 km2 it becomes the largest lake in Slovenia.

Tourism

Notranjski offers to visitors numerous programs for day and weekend tours: short and long walks through the natural and cultural attractions, traditional boat ride, cycling, caving and observing wildlife. Hiking trails lead to the peaks: Slivnica, Veliki Javornik, Špičasto Stražišče and Križna Gora. For more ready hikers there is a Notranjska transversal to win all four peaks together. For visitors on trip, there are pedestrian educational paths. The best known are Rakov Škocjan and Menišija, educational paths that provide access to the natural cultural heritage of this region. The shortest is Pčelarska (Beekeeping) educational trail, a circular one-hour excursion tour, available all year round. Geological characteristics of Notranjsko Regional Park offer a diverse selection of bicycle paths in an idyllic natural setting. For lovers of the underworld there are lakes hidden in a cave Križna jama.

Connection

Regional Park can be accessed by a fast road Ljubljana – Trst. With Ljubljana from which it is 53 kilometers away, there is a well organized bus transport. Also, connection with the railway is good. The advantage of the railway transport is the fact that you can put your bicycle in it as well. The railway station in Cerknica, the nearest center to Notranjska, is a good starting point for bicycle tours Rakov Škocjan or Cerkniško Lake.
