Project: Testing the Guidelines for ecosystem services assessment and valorization and their integration into the development plans of management institutions of the protected area “Orjen” through developing Orjen Mountain Case Study
Donor: German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development
Duration: April 2020. – February 2021.
Total budget: 20.000 EUR

The aim of the project was to analyze the most important ecosystem services that will be integrated in the decision-making process related to these protected areas through the creation of Orjen Mountain Case Study. The project itself analyzed four priority ecosystem services important for the Orjen mountain area: beekeeping, agriculture, cattle breeding and eco-tourism and their benefits for local communities and nature. These services are recognized as the main activities of the local population to which Orjen represents the living environment.

The guidelines, which were tested in the pilot area of Orjen Mountain, and developed by a team of experts from the Provincial Institute for Nature Protection in Vojvodina, are designed to show good practice for establishing protected areas and their management with full respect for ecosystem services. This document will serve as a guide for the integration of ecosystem services into the planning process, which includes an overview of a series of steps for conducting the assessment and evaluation of ecosystem services in the context of management plans for protected areas.

In addition to the final result of the project in the form of the Orjen Mountain Case Study, the second result of the project is the Feasibility Study which presented the development and method of valorization of two recreational trails (one in Montenegro and the other in Bosnia and Herzegovina) which will generate economic benefits by attracting more visitors. The study analyzed the trails and proposed their arrangement, which is in accordance with the principles of sustainable development, taking into account the impact on the environment and safe stay of visitors to the Orjen Nature Park.
