Donors: US Forest Service International Programms
Duration: 1st December 2022. – 31st November 2023.
Total budget: 49,990 EUR

The project Improving the management of protected areas in Montenegro is implemented in partnership with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) as a component of the 3rd phase of the Balkan Waters Project.

Project is aimed to improve the legal framework in the sector of nature conservation in Montenegro, to strengthen it with good practices in effective management of protected areas, as well as ensure that it is aligned with the EU environmental legislation.

The main activities include:

  1. Analyze the gaps in existing policies and practice pertinent to protected area management (e.g. unclear mandates, overlaps with other sectors / institutions, lack of capacities) and identify recommendations for improvement.
  2. Initiate policy dialogue and cooperation through meetings and round table discussions with PAs managers, local and state governments, and CSOs to support initiatives for improvement of management of protected areas, based on the developed recommendations
  3. Training workshops for protected area managers and rangers. This will allow a transfer of knowledge and skills from more experienced colleagues in the region, as well as from Europe and the U.S.
  4. Purchase small-scale equipment for rangers from one of the newly established Protected areas

The project is supported by US Forest Service International Programs
