Research on fish fauna in the Natural Monument “Cijevna Canyon” begins tomorrow

Podgorica (MINA) – Parks Dinarides in cooperation with experts from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro, will start research on fish fauna tomorrow in the Natural Monument Cijevna Canyon.

Parkovi Dinarida stated that previous research indicates an unfavorable state in the abundance of fish stocks in the Cijevna River, although this river represents an important habitat for species such as brown trout, huchen (Danube salmon), eel, and other fish species.

“For this very reason, this research is of particular importance for a better understanding of the current situation and for defining concrete conservation measures,” they said.

They explained that the goal of the research is to determine the condition of fish stocks, i.e. the status and population size of fish species, with special focus on protected and endangered species such as native trout and eel.

“The collected data will be used as a professional basis for the development of a five-year Management Plan for the Natural Monument Cijevna Canyon,” they added.

The research will be carried out through three seasonal cycles (winter, spring, and autumn) during this year, in order to capture seasonal changes in the composition and abundance of fish populations.

Parkovi Dinarida also reminded that the Municipality of Tuzi established the company “Natural Monument Cijevna Canyon,” which manages the protected area.

“The results of the research will enable the definition of concrete protection and management measures, which the managing authority, in cooperation with relevant institutions, will implement to preserve and improve fish stocks and the overall ecosystem of the Cijevna River,” they stated.

They emphasized that these research activities are part of a broader project implemented by Parkovi Dinarida, aimed at supporting the newly established management body in setting up a functional system for managing the protected area. The project is financially supported by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund.
