Location

Šargan-Mokra Gora is situated in the western part of Serbia. It has the surface of 10,813.73 hectares.

History

The area of Mokra Gora and Šargan belonged to Tara National Park until 2005, when this region was declared an area of outstanding national importance.

Nature

Nature Park includes basin of Mokra Gora and part of Kremanska kotlina (basin), southeast surface of Tara, northwest branches of Zlatibor and the pass Šargan which stands between the two mountains. This whole area is part of the eastern branches of the Interior Dinarides. The highest peaks of the Park are the Iver at 1478 m and Zborišta at 1544 m, which is the highest corner of the mountain Tara. Waters of Mokra Gora basin drain to Drina, while waters of Kremansko basin flow into Zapadna (West) Morava. Watershed between the two basins makes the pass Šargan. The largest streams are Kamešina, Beli Rzav and Bratešina. When it comes to water manifestations, a special treasure are medicinal springs – highly alkaline sources of St. John the Baptist – Bela voda (white water) and Dulov izvor (source) in the riverbed of Kamešina, Radovan’s source of salty water in Kotroman and the source of mineral water Glišova voda in the village Kremna.
Flora of the Nature Park is represented by types of the different ecology, age and origin. Of the nearly 800 described species of the area, 60 of them belong to the endemic flora. Vegetation cover is characterized by the predominant presence of the forest in which the most common communities are alder and white willow, black pine, oak, beech and spruce. In addition to forest vegetation, this area is covered with the vegetation of meadows and pastures, rocks, rock crevices, high greenery and rock creeps. Different types of habitats caused the richness and diversity of the animal world as well. In the cold river waters the most often are encountered brook barbel, trout, chub and European bullhead. Among land animals numerous species of amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals stand out, among which the most attractive are marten, wild cat, otter, wolf, brown bear, deer and chamois.

Sights

In the Park 20 geoheritage objects are set out, among which stand out, in terms of attractiveness, Beli Rzav canyon, gorge of Suvi potok, Devil’s Cave, Hajdučka cave, sinkholes on Ljuto polje, mires of Vračarići lakes and waterfall Veliki skakavac (big grasshopper) on Kamešina. The area of the Nature Park “Šargan – Mokra Gora” is an internationally Important Bird Area (IBA), an internationally Important Plant Area (IPA), the selected area for butterflies in Serbia (Prime Butterfly Areas in Serbia – PBA) and Emerald area. Also, the Nature Park has been recognized as part of a potential international Biosphere Reserve “Drina”, which should be established on the middle of flow of the river Drina between Serbia and Republika Srpska (B&H).

Tourism

Through Nature park passes European footpath E7. There are also four arranged local trails with a total length of 50 km. There are three bike trails with a total length of 100 km. In addition to swimming in the river Kamišna and in the pool in Drvengrad, visitors are offered: bird watching, recreational fishing, excursions, jeep and photo-safari. At the distance of 8 km from Drvengrad, at Iver, there are 4 trails for alpine skiing (red and black categories). A special experience is a trip by the old train “Šargan Eight”, along the narrow-gauge tourist railroad intended for visits to the Nature Park.

Connection

Distance from Višegrad is 23 km, from Užice 51km, from Valjevo 101 km, from Čačak 110 km, and from Belgrade 255 km. Mokra Gora can be reached by bus, car or bicycle. Through the protected area passes the regional road Užice – Višegrad.
