Second Phase of the Cijevna Canyon Management Project Officially Launched

The Parkovi Dinarida network has launched the second phase of the project entitled “Contribution to the Improvement of the Management of the Natural Monument Cijevna Canyon – Phase II”, supported by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF). The project will run from October 2025 to December 2027.

Continuation of Successful Efforts

The first phase of the project, carried out during 2022–2023, contributed to the establishment of the managing body for the Cijevna River Canyon. On 3 April 2025, the Municipality of Tuzi Assembly made a decision to appoint the manager, thereby granting institutional support and a management structure to this natural monument.

Strengthening Protection and Sustainable Development

The new phase of the project is aimed at strengthening the capacities of the managing body, preparing a five-year management plan, and training personnel. Planned activities include a mentoring programme, a study visit to Croatia, the development of an official website, and procurement of necessary equipment for the Protection Service.

In addition, the project will include biodiversity research — focusing on ichthyofauna, herpetofauna, mammals, plants and birds — as well as enhancing cross-border cooperation with Albania through joint activities and the development of a river restoration plan for the Cijevna. For this purpose, cooperation will be established with the Institute for Nature Conservation Albania (INCA) and other relevant institutions in Albania.

Sustainable Tourism as a New Opportunity

In cooperation with the local partner Malesia Adventures, a new thematic trail named “Cijevna Mystic Trail” will be established, contributing to the development of sustainable tourism and promotion of the natural and cultural values of this area. Special focus will be placed on educating guides and interpreting the heritage in line with European standards.

The project “Cijevna Canyon – Phase II” represents an important step towards establishing a solid foundation for the future work of the managing body. The planned activities will contribute to biodiversity conservation, strengthening the local community, and developing an ecotourism offer.
